1956 JAGUAR D-TYPE

This car, XKD 605, was the penultimate D-type, built in March 1956. Allocated to the Jaguar racing team, it first raced at the Reims 12-hour race which it won, Duncan Hamilton and Ivor Bueb being the victorious drivers.

Carrying the race number 1 (and running with the trade plate registration 393 RW), this time Mike Hawthorn accompanied Bueb at the wheel. A cracked fuel injection pipe caused a constant misfire in the car and could only manage a sixth place.

Later in the year, Jaguar retired from racing and the car was lent to the American Cunningham / Momo. Returning from the USA in 1961, the car then was lent to the Museo Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia, Italy's national motor museum in Turin. XKD 605 finally returned to its birthplace twenty years later and is now kept at the Jaguar collection at their Brown's Lane factory in Coventry.
