MOTOR INDUSTRY AWARDS 2003

The winners are as follows:-

AMATEUR DESIGNER OF THE YEAR – 16 years or over

JAGUAR SUV CATEGORY

Hundreds of entries were received for his unique competition. The winning accolade goes to Michael Heasman who said ‘To me a Jaguar should be long and sleek, its proportions lower and longer than its rivals. My rear treatment is styled to suggest the ’61 E-type coupe".

Ian Callum, Design Director Jaguar Cars says ‘Jaguars are fundamentally sports cars and SUV’s are the antithesis of that, yet this design has managed to capture a jaguar look with its small cabin over a big body".

Design Chief, Geoff Upex said "It looks really tough on one hand, but elegant on the other. The combination works fine fir a Jaguar. It’s certainly do-able.

ASTON MARTIN 2050 CATEGORY

Gareth Williams takes first position with his design of an Aston Martin for 2050. Explaining his design, Gareth said "My car uses four high-performance electric motors, one at each wheel. Powerful haunches and menacing front wings give an intimidating stance. The driver presses an illuminated Union Jack to enter the car".

‘This car reminds me of when the Italians used to make proper show cars. I really like its original proportions". Commented Ian Callum, Design Director Jaguar Cars.

"It doesn’t use a lot of voluptuous design language’ says Land Rover design Geoff Upex. "But it still looks like an Aston. It could not be anything else".

YOUNG DESIGNER – 16 years or under

The standard of entries for this category was exceptional as was the number of designs. The brief was to design a Land Rover sports car.

The winning design chosen by the panel of judges was by James Taylor aged 16 from Loughborough.

Geoff Upex, Land Rover Design Chief said "It’s a courageous design. It’s different, but it would wear the Land Rover badge okay".

Callum agreed: "It’s quite exciting, very minimalist, but sports cars are minimalist, aren’t they?".
